Leaving Tofo the next morning and we were already planning our next trip back. When asking Roy about what he felt the best time of year was, he said that any time of year has the potential to be great. “We had a trip in April last year quite like the week you had”, he told us, “with more than 80 Mantas and 30 Whale Sharks in one week, but our average during the year for our clients is about 20 Mantas and 10 Whale Sharks.
In two years, we had only one trip where we didn’t see Whale Sharks and that was due to surface conditions. We’ve never had a trip where we didn’t see Manta Rays – that’s why we never worry about the money back guarantee!” (The Mozambique Experience offers its clients a year round 500euro money back guarantee if they do not see a Manta or a Whale Shark) . “My favorite time of year”, he continued, “is our winter – July, August and September. The waters a little colder, but we have plenty of Mantas and Whale Sharks, as well as having the Humpback Whales coming through. Diving with Mantas and snorkeling with Whale Sharks and a Humpback Whale in the same morning is hard to beat.” Too good to be true!
While the diving portion of our tour was over, there was still the Kruger National Park in South Africa to look forward to. As part of its standard tour, after diving in Tofo, the Mozambique Experience takes its clients on a two day wildlife safari for a chance to see Africa’s Big 5. Having never been to southern Africa before, it was a great experience for us and we were once again amazed by the abundance and diversity of Africa’s wildlife – this time above the water.
With our expectations met, and exceeded, we returned to cold Europe, taking comfort in the knowledge that we would be back diving in Mozambique sometime very soon.
